Outdoor Material Calculators

Estimate concrete, gravel, pavers, mulch, topsoil, sand, sod, retaining wall blocks, fence materials, and post-hole concrete. Enter your dimensions and get material estimates in seconds.

Outdoor Calculators

These ten calculators work together for typical outdoor jobs. A patio build might use the concrete slab calculator or paver calculator for the surface, the gravel calculator for the base layer, and the sand calculator for the setting bed. A fence project pairs the fence material calculator with the post hole concrete calculator. Use them in any order -- each gives an independent material estimate you can bring to your supplier.

How Material Estimates Work

Every calculator on MaterialEstimate uses the same approach: convert your project dimensions into volume (cubic feet or cubic yards), then convert that into the unit your supplier sells the material in -- tons, bags, or yards. The math is straightforward, but the waste buffer is where most DIYers and even some contractors get tripped up.

Always Add a Waste Buffer
Uneven ground, spillage, cuts, and breakage all reduce your usable material. Add 10% for most materials, 15% for gravel and topsoil (which compact and settle), and 15-20% for cut-heavy paver patterns.
Bulk vs. Bags
For almost any material, bulk delivery becomes cheaper than bags around 2-3 cubic yards. Under that threshold, bags are convenient. Above it, bulk saves money and time on delivery.
Verify Before You Order
Calculators give a solid starting estimate. Material density, regional product sizing, and site conditions vary. Always confirm final quantities with your supplier before placing a bulk order.

Working on an indoor renovation too? The interior renovation calculators cover paint, drywall, tile, vinyl flooring, and carpet.

Disclaimer: All calculators on MaterialEstimate provide estimates only. Actual material quantities depend on site conditions, product specifications, and installation method. Always verify final amounts with your contractor or supplier before ordering.
